...or, "How the Twinkie Won the Hearts of People Everywhere"...
We've been both made fun of and applauded in all sorts of newspapers,
interviewed on the radio, had the site picked as the site of the day for
every category from humor to bizarre to sublime, and been flat-out
laughed at. But thats OK, we did these experiments for the good of
humanity, not for fame and fortune. Which is a good thing, because we
don't have any fortune. We do have a bit of fame though.
Here is a list of accolades that have graciously been bestowed upon us:
- Dick Oliver, president of Cedar Software, is The Coolest
Guy in the World!!! Not only did he send us a spiffy diploma-thingy, but
he also sent us way-rad fractal ties. People, coolness like this should not
go unnoticed...if you have the chance to, buy something from Cedar Software.
We mean it.
- The Houston Chronicle
of June 18th talked about us in their On-Line section. Todd was nice
enough to type it up so that we can bring you the text of the article on the web.
- John Kelso from the Austin American-Statesman did a lovely
little article on us August 7, 1995 (Austin/Boston, within a day of each
other, coincidence? You decide!) Since Chris is from Austin, he had to
type this one in just in case you want to see the actual text.
- The Boston Globe
wrote an interesting editorial using us on August 6, 1995. The text is here, because you know you're curious.
- Thanks to Dave Winer of HotWired for
blurbing us August 3, 1995. Okay, it's in a postscript at the bottom of an
article about Microsoft, but still, we're all for it!
- We were listed under the SharewAIR section of the
Annals of Improbable Research. Don't know how or why, but the
authorities said best leave it alone. I'm not sure we're still here...but,
hey, we were, I swear!
- We got put on (and of course taken off of) Netscape's What's New
page for July 14.
- We got put on KZON 101.5FM Phoenix's links page. What's really cool
about this is that they interviewed Todd on the phone and played that on the
radio to, like, gazillions of Phoenixians. Wowee, huh? Wanna hear the actual broadcast? (840k .au) We're proud
- We got put in the Useless Pages
archive, right under Mr. Wu's Send-a-Pickle!!!
- Yahoo bestowed us a place in their
Entertainment: Humor, Jokes and Fun listing. Immortality, here we
come! Teehee.
- The Advanced Graphics Division at Silicon Graphics, Inc.,
some other scientists devoted to pushing the envelope of discovery and
experimentation, saw fit to include us on their
Antics and Mayhem page.
- Were were apparently mentioned in passing in Inside Media
magazine on 9/20/95. It isn't exactly prominent, but it's there!
- We were also bestowed a place in the world-famous and well-known
magazine Photo Electronic Imaging Magazine vol.38, no.10, 1995.
"Tom and John" (possibly aliases to protect their identity) were lovely
enough to send us photocopies, since we both seem to have let our subscriptions
run out. Anyways, the text of the column
is available for your reading pleasure.
- A new surge of interest has landed us on USA Today Online's Cyberlistings
page (for Oct 15, 1995). Wow! A National Newspaper! Where's our Nobel
Prize?
- At about the same time (October 19, 1995), we ended up on the Tres
Bizzarre page, which is supposedly a look into the stranger side
of the web. I don't think we're as strange as these pages, but then
again, its not our decision.
- Were were sort-of-featured in Netsurfer Digest
Volume 1, Number 32. Wow! I
think I'll go tell my mom. They were so nice, that we have blatantly
stolen a copy of the article
and put it up here.
- We were picked as the Humor Site of
the Every Other Day for a couple days in August. It would have
been only one day, but this guy is too lazy to change his link every day.
Oh well, thats more "glory" for us I guess.
- We were reviewed as part of the Top 5% of the Internet. We're
somewhere in the maze of pages. (5% is a lot of sites!) I think we're
under Entertainment/Humor or something like that. We actually are tied
with a couple other pages for highest "Experience" score in the category.
Does that mean that Todd and Chris are experienced? Beats us!.
- We were mentioned somehow, somewhere, in "The Quad", the
newspaper of West Chester University. Who is this Chester guy
anyway?
- We were placed on the Underground Internet Poster put out by
PC Computing Magazine in
December 1995. This was the same issue that they picked the best 1001
sites on the Internet. We're slightly bitter that we were put on the
poster, which has 121 sites, but not picked as one of the best 1001
sites. That doesn't make sense. They even had a "Junk Food" Category! Of
course, this IS the same magazine that picked their OWN site as one of
the top 10 picks.
- We were blurbed in the November 17-23, 1995 issue of LA Weekly.
(thats Vol.17, No. 51. p. 125). They blurb us, we blurb them. Fair huh?
If anybody is feeling particularly generous, we'd appreciate a copy of
this. LA is a long way away.
- We were blessed with a full feature article in the Philadelphia Inquirer on
November 30, 1995. They were nice enough to put the text of the whole
article online, so we could simply cut and paste the text of the article instead of
having to type it in. Thanks Tanya!
- Rumor has it that there was a nifty article in the San Jose
Mercury News on December 4, 1995 (page 12C). Todd has relatives
there, so we should have the text of this one sometime soon.
- We were mentioned in an editorial in the December 1995 issue of Computers In Nursing Magazine as
a great example of basic research. Twinkies as hospital food? Hmmm. Who
knows?
- On December 6, 1995, we were placed on something called Suck. Is that a good thing or a bad
thing? We're not quite sure. Actually, we're not quite sure what this page
IS, much less what being placed on it means for the future of Twinkie
research. Several people sent us notes about it though, so whatever it is,
people must read it.
- U Magazine sez: we're worthy! Whatever that means, they say they'll be linking to us sometime, but they haven't
yet. But we've linked to them, so fair is fair. Turnabout is
fair play. My Fair Lady is a good play, too. I'm done now.
- Apparently, the aforementioned article by Tanya Barrientos was picked
up by the Knight-Ridder news service. Now twinkie articles are showing
up in papers across the country, including the Washington Post
(12/6/95), Arizona Star
(12/9/95), Toledo Blade (12/??/95), the Jacksonville
Times-Union
(12/7/95), the New Haven Register (12/??/95), Annapolis
Capital (12/??/95), the Yakima, Washington paper, the
Abilene Reporter-News (12/11/95), the Detroit Free Press
(12/12/95), the Raleigh News and Observer (12/14/95), and the
Austin American Statesman (12/23/95). Wow! This is cool in that we
get widespread fame, but
bad in that it stifles creativity. Its the same damn article in all of
them.
- KISW Radio in Seattle placed us on
their cool links page. They are propogating the vicious rumor that you can
find out the exact shelf life of a Twinkie by looking at this page. Once
and for all, this is FALSE! We don't know what the exact shelf life
of a Twinkie is. How can we test that when we haven't even been alive that
long??
- WLLZ 98.7 in Detroit did a big on the air plug of us. I don't
suppose anybody happens to have it on tape and wants to send it to us?
Didn't think so.
- We had a couple screen shots on MTV's "The Year in Rock",
where Kurt Loder described the page as "an existential contemplation of
the lowly Twinkie." We've now hit all the major medias! Hooray! Radio,
TV, Books, Magazine, and Web. Do we get a medal now?
Have you seen us elsewhere and think we'd be darn proud to know about it?
Mail
us!!!
Please note: Due to the large volume of mail that we receive, we
cannot individually answer all messages. We DO read them all though, and
answer those we deem worthy.
